A "memorable architectural icon"
Praised as a "radiant departure from campus antecedents," the Katzen Arts Center's gateway presence helped redefine the university's public image while showcasing its nationally renowned arts programs. The building was designed to promote creative partnerships between the visual arts, music, and dance programs. An interior avenue responds to the building's long, narrow site and links distinct elements, including a museum, recital hall, black-box theater, dance rehearsal space, classrooms, art studios, and music practice and ensemble spaces. A "piazza" along the avenue provides an engaging setting for informal gatherings and impromptu performances, and a landscaped plaza serves as an outdoor venue for the display of sculpture.
